Why is the ketogenic lifestyle so effective?  A typical diet these days encourages your body to burn sugars and carbohydrates (glucose) as a primary source of fuel.  Your body gets used to having a readily-available supply of glucose, so it ramps up carbohydrate metabolism or the pathways within the body that use carbohydrates to create energy for the body to do work.

A ketogenic lifestyle will encourage your body to use its own fat stores as fuel, too. Once your body has used up its own carbohydrate stores (glycogen in the muscles and liver), it will begin to utilize the fats stored in adipose tissue for energy.  Fun fact: we know that carbohydrates are the fastest burning macronutrient. Here's why: carbohydrates turn into glucose in the blood, and because the body recognizes glucose as something that will potentially harm the cell, the body works to get rid of it as quickly as possible.  Smart, huh?

Being in ketosis also reduces the insulin in your body because there’s not as much free glucose in your blood, encouraging your body to dip into its fat stores to stay fueled.  Lower insulin levels can also bring about a whole host of health benefits, including a decreased risk of developing Type II Diabetes and other metabolic conditions like heart disease.

In summary, a high-fat, moderate protein, low-carb ketogenic lifestyle encourages your body to shift its natural metabolism over to pathways that burn more fat.  Your body will naturally shift over and start to use more and more fat as a fuel source. You’ll start to burn through your body’s fat stores in your fat cells, helping you slim down and stay focused without feeling hungry.

As a Registered Massage Therapist and Nutritional Consultant, I thought I understood how to lose weight and feel great - cut fat, cut calories and increase exercise.  

All that was well and good until I gained 30 lbs in the space of 2 years.


Like many women in their late forties, I found my hormones changing and my metabolism slowing down! 

I started exercising more and reducing my calories but that made little impact on the scale.


The Keto Craze was splashed taking over the Internet.  I just couldn’t understand how “more fat” helped you lose fat??!! 

Fast forward eight months. 

Removing processed foods and sugar from my diet was not easy but after a few weeks, I started to feel amazing and my thinking was so clear. I adopted a

Whole Foods diet which included plenty of healthy fats like avocado, salmon, nuts and coconut oil!

Never feeling deprived or hungry, I continue on this extraordinary eating strategy for close to a year and the benefits have been amazing!  Consistent fat loss, focused thinking, sustained energy and my “hot flashes” have relented completely
